Contain Waste Oil Hazards With Frontline International’s Smart Oil Management™ Systems

Handling hot, messy waste oil from fryers can be one of the most dangerous workplace hazards in the foodservice industry. Carrying full buckets and pouring oil creates the potential for burns, slip-and-fall accidents, and other injuries. Frontline International, the creator of Smart Oil Management systems for fresh and waste oil, offers flexible and customizable waste oil containment solutions for increasing workplace safety while dramatically minimizing employees’ contact with oil.

Frontline International systems for waste oil handling were designed to filter, empty, and store waste oil from fryers. With three different options to choose from—and the ability to customize a solution to fit available space—kitchen managers can find an option for improving waste oil containment practices for almost any restaurant.

Not only will a Frontline International system help eliminate the risks of having employees filling and toting buckets, but it can also save labor and time, reduce the risk of liability related to injuries, and contribute to environmental safety.

Frontline International offers three different waste oil containment systems. The constant is a containment tank that safely and securely stores the waste oil. Tanks range in size from 100 gallons to 350 gallons and can be located indoors or outdoors or accessed via a remote inlet system from a tank in another room or even on another floor. Frontline International’s waste oil containment tanks can be used with any of the three systems and are fully upgradeable if volume needs change.

Which option is best for your operation?

The fully automated Direct-Plumbed® waste oil system is the easiest to use and ensures zero contact with waste oil. Oil flows directly from fryers to the waste oil containment tank with just the push of a button. The system comes in many sizes to meet any kitchen’s needs, from small store spaces to freestanding, fast-paced restaurants—including those with a busy drive-thru.

The semi-automated Waste Oil Pump Station system is ideal if your fryers don’t have a built-in filtration pump. An external pump controls the flow of waste oil. Using a flexible, high-temperature hose and suction wand with a permanent filter, used oil is pumped out of the fryer by a wall-mounted pump station. The oil is transferred from the fryers through the heavy-gauge stainless steel pump to a containment tank via the PumpFlow™ system.

The least expensive option, the manual CaddyFlow™ system, uses a stainless steel waste oil caddy and a flexible high-temperature hose to transfer waste oil. This system is compatible with any low-profile fryer and takes up little space, so it’s ideal for small or crowded kitchens. With the manual system, the caddy is wheeled to fryers to collect waste oil using the flex hose. Then the caddy is wheeled to the containment tank, where oil is transferred via the hose. This is a dramatic improvement over workers having to hand-carry buckets and be exposed to potential spills or splashes of hot oil.

All Frontline International tanks can be equipped with the company’s proprietary M3 data management system that lets you monitor, measure, and manage oil use. With M3, you can track usage by store unit with the ability to monitor collection volumes and compare statistics on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

“No matter what your volume or store layout, we have a way to improve employee safety when it comes to waste oil handling,” says Giovanni Brienza, vice president of Frontline International. “With three options to choose from, and each customizable to your space and needs, handling waste oil need no longer be messy and dangerous. We are proud to say that our equipment is popular and easy to use; you can find it in the kitchens of foodservice facilities across the globe.”

All Frontline International equipment is backed by a one-year warranty.

Frontline International’s Direct-Plumbed Systems Offer Safer, More Efficient Handling

If you’ve searched for a safer, cleaner way to get both fresh and waste cooking oil to and from your fryers, you’ll find a hands-free solution in Frontline International’s cost-effective, highly efficient Smart Oil Management systems. The company offers a choice of automated, direct-plumbed systems for both fresh and waste oil, which send the oil directly to its destination with minimal or no handling by employees.

Direct-plumbed systems lower the risk of potentially dangerous spills, burns, or slip-and-fall injuries. And no more heavy buckets to haul or drag.

For fresh oil, Frontline International offers its EZ Oil™ System for Standard Packaged Oil, which stores and manages fresh oil that you purchase in boxes or jugs. Boxes are placed upside-down on racks to ensure complete emptying, increasing yields by up to 10%. The boxed oil can be directly plumbed to the fryer for a fully automatic connection, so fryers are filled with a simple push of a button — not by pouring by hand out of a bulky box or jug.

For waste oil, Frontline International’s fully automated direct-plumbed system helps ensure worker safety and easier oil collection. With a push of a button, used oil leaves the fryers and flows into the system’s secure waste oil containment tanks — inside or outside your facility. Frontline International’s stainless steel waste oil tanks also have collection ports equipped with an integrated locking anti-theft valve, part of the company’s available web-based M3 data management system that allows users to monitor, measure, and manage oil usage and collection 24/7.

Frontline International’s direct-plumbed solutions for both fresh and waste oil make handling hot oil obsolete. That means potential savings on insurance, workers’ compensation, and employee downtime; greater employee safety; and cleaner floors and grounds. The equipment is modular and customizable and can be adapted to nearly any size space, even small and complex store layouts.

All Frontline International equipment is backed by a one-year warranty on both parts and labor. Call today to learn more about their Smart Oil Management systems for fresh and waste cooking oil.

Frontline International’s Flexible Oil Filtration System Lets You Choose Your Filter

Frontline International, a leader in cooking oil management solutions, offers a Flexible Filter System as part of their approach to Smart Oil Management. The company’s systems help customers manage all aspects of restaurant cooking oil for quality and profitability through equipment designed for efficient fresh and waste oil management and oil filtration — the key to longer shortening life.

The Flexible Filter System is a standalone oil filtration system growing in popularity with customers. Since proper filtration is so important, Frontline International makes it easier with a system that lets users easily change to different types of filter media according to the restaurant’s needs and oil usage.

The Flexible Filter System offers a choice of two filtration media: stainless steel or paper. You may even choose different media from store to store, or you can switch filters depending on the type and quantity of foods being fried.

Each filter type has its advantages and benefits. A stainless screen is the most affordable of the filters. It’s continuously reusable and won’t rust or tear under normal usage. Paper filters can increase the quality of fried foods because less oil is absorbed into food, making food taste better and oil last longer. Frontline International’s paper filters have no loose powder; it’s impregnated into the pad to control destructive chemical reactions in the oil.

With the Flexible Filter System, you choose the filter that works best for you and your operations. A removable bucket makes cleanup simple and safe. And best of all, this system can be used with any type or size of fryer.

All of Frontline International’s fresh and waste oil management systems are modular, flexible, and upgradable. Their equipment includes a one-year warranty on both parts and labor.

Frontline International Installs First Cooking Oil Management Equipment in the GCC Region

A new foodservice equipment installation in a quick-serve restaurant chain located in Kuwait was heralded by three days of collegiate-level product training and system indoctrination. The intensive training sessions were balanced by a 48-hour open house atmosphere, complete with celebratory dinners and attendance by all levels of chain employees, including operators, purchasing, customer service and quality control staff, and executives. And what was creating such a buzz? A cooking oil management system for fresh and waste oil, the first of its kind in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

The goal was to implement an automated fresh oil dispensing and waste oil collection system to reduce the expense and human injury toll associated with oily messes, spills, and burns that are often (and unfortunately) assumed to be a routine part of foodservice operation. The restaurant chain’s management worked closely with the system’s manufacturer, Frontline International, for almost two years to develop and customize the equipment solutions.

From the depth of the training to the festivities that surrounded the training, the focus was always on employee safety and quality of life. Operators and owners from a great number of other stores were on hand to see the system at work.

“This installation was special. There was so much excitement surrounding this modern, hands-free solution to oil management. It was celebrated like a grand opening,” said Giovanni Brienza, vice president, Frontline International. “The equipment managers really understood how the system would benefit everyone in the chain and approached the training with such great enthusiasm,” said Brienza.

The custom oil-management system designed for the Kuwaiti installation will dispense fresh oil to the fryers and collect and store the waste cooking oil for eventual pickup or disposal. The automated system means that employees don’t have to handle hot and messy cooking oil, chicken fat, and grill grease. The chain’s managers see the system as a big win because it will give them huge safety, environmental, and cost-saving advantages.

The system is equipped with some of Frontline International’s most advanced technologies, including an application that calibrates the condition and volume of the oil automatically. As oil is lost — or naturally absorbed into the fried product — the system automatically tops off fryers with fresh oil, which maximizes consistent taste and quality. Oil filtering is also completely automatic and hands-free.

“It was really enjoyable to see the customer finally ready to reap the benefits of their plan to reduce injuries related to hot oil use,” said Brienza. “And they’re loving the idea of managing their oil supply and making the food taste even better.”

Frontline International plans to expand installation of this equipment in restaurants throughout the region, cascading sales through other locations in Kuwait. Plans also foresee implementation of equipment in select neighboring countries that will include Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Waste Oil Monitoring Made Easy and Secure With Frontline International’s M3 Data Management System

M3 (Monitor, Measure and Manage) is an available web-based add-on system that works in concert with all of Frontline International’s waste oil management systems. M3 makes it easy to track all statistics concerning your restaurant’s waste oil data across any given time period. The system can be accessed online any time, from any computer, digital tablet, or smartphone with an internet connection.

Using the M3 electronic dashboard, you can compare statistics daily, weekly, or monthly. You can also track oil usage and filtration, schedule oil pickups, and perform other diagnostics. Alarms can be set to automatically trigger emails or texts to headquarters, franchisees, oil collection companies, or multiple entities before your waste tank ever reaches the full status. As an added benefit to prevent oil theft, the M3 system allows you to lock the storage tank collection ports remotely via activation of the anti-theft valve, making it impossible for thieves to drain out the stored oil. If problems with your tanks ever arise, diagnostic warnings are sent simultaneously to both you and Frontline International’s service technicians.

The M3 system was a winner of the prestigious Kitchen Innovations™ Award from the National Restaurant Association in 2013.

Frontline International Helps Harvard Excel at Cooking Oil Management

Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) is the oldest collegiate foodservice establishment in the country, as well as one of the largest. With a staff of 650, they serve an average of 25,000 meals a day during the academic year and 5 million meals annually. And a lot of those meals involve fryers and cooking oil.

Director for HUDS Operations & Facilities Robert Leandro has been doing the job for 40 years. He not only oversees renovations and maintenance but also is HUDS’ environmental safety and compliance manager. Leandro realized the university’s foodservice operations needed a better system for managing used cooking oil to comply with the university’s spill prevention and containment program.

“Like a lot of folks, we had 55-gallon drums and dumpsters outside for waste oil,” Leandro said. “Employees would try to pour hot oil in, it would spill; it was not a great system. We wanted to bring the storage inside and find a way to minimize spills.”

He wanted a system that would work for all 30 locations in which they operate on Harvard’s campus. And HUDS had a particular challenge. Unlike chain restaurants, HUDS establishments’ menus are different every day, and they also change seasonally. He needed a solution that could work everywhere there was a fryer on campus, whatever the setup, menu, or volume.

Leandro was introduced several years ago to Frontline International at the annual National Restaurant Show in Chicago. He enjoyed their conversation and was impressed with their products. “It was the people that made the real difference,” said Leandro. In 2000, he made the decision to start phasing in Frontline’s equipment.

Initially, they used Frontline’s caddy system to shuttle waste oil from fryers to storage tanks, into which it could be pumped hands-free. That was a big improvement over previous methods they had used. The caddy system proved to be very economical, and it is ideal for operations where space is tight or where older fryer equipment does not allow for a direct-plumbed system. Utilizing caddies eliminated the old method of an employee physically carrying used oil in buckets, so it lowered the risk of spills, injuries, and accidents.

In 2004, Harvard underwent a renovation to some operations in its dining facilities, and Leandro took that opportunity to install Frontline’s direct-plumbed system. The direct-plumbed system is fully automated, allowing oil to flow from fryers to storage tanks with just the push of a button. “We’ve even retrofitted some of our existing fryers so they can be pumped to the tank,” said Leandro. “To this day, I haven’t had any problems.”

Leandro’s approach has even changed the way his suppliers do business. For example, he was such a fan of Frontline’s equipment that he required his renderer to provide Frontline’s tanks. However, the company from which he purchases HUDS’ fryers wouldn’t build or alter their fryers in order to allow the used oil to be pumped directly to the storage tanks. But Leandro knew many other vendors who would. He pushed his supplier to change. “I went to the president of the company and said, ‘I can’t buy from you anymore. These other companies, they will do it.’ Now, their fryers are suddenly able to [be direct-plumbed]!” He added, “If people are hesitant, I can assure them: Whatever frying company you are buying from will adapt their fryers. They have to.”

Leandro’s previous foodservice positions include cook, butcher, pantry steward, production manager, general manager, and Assistant Director for Residential Dining at Harvard. He was promoted to his current position in 2005.

Because of his wide-ranging experience in the field, Leandro is often asked for his opinion or to speak at industry gatherings such as for the National Association of College & University Food Services. “I always suggest Frontline. They are the company I use, and I’ve had good experiences with them. And our cooks love the system.”

Leandro said, “I tell people, ‘Get those 55-gallon drums off your dock. You have other options. If you can find room for a hot water heater, you can find room for a Frontline storage tank.’”

Frontline International Delivers “Oil” the Advantages to Southern Burger Chain

Back in the 1950s, the founder of a burger chain set out to “wow” customers from their first bite of a burger so good that they’d say, “Now that’s a delicious burger!” His mission was to establish a restaurant with a reputation for quality and fresh taste, and, in its seven decades, the chain has grown to more than 700 stores dotting nearly a dozen states across the South.

So when the popular chain began working a few years ago with Frontline International to achieve better management of its restaurants’ cooking and waste oil, they also found a way to help increase their employees’ safety, protect their oil supply, and control costs.

The chain’s equipment manager has been with the company for 30 years. In that time, the burger business has changed, but not its daily use of many gallons of cooking oil and the resulting output of waste oil from cooking burgers and chicken and deep-frying fries. Hot oil is not only a slip-and-fall hazard in the kitchen, but toting and pouring hot waste oil into a dumpster is also a hazardous undertaking for employees. And then there’s the recent surge in waste oil theft. That’s why they called Frontline.

The chain has retrofitted about a dozen stores with Frontline’s direct-plumbed waste oil management system. With its push-button, hands-free technology, this system offers many benefits over previous systems, including the ability to reduce risk by controlling spills and by securing the waste oil with an anti-theft valve on its collection ports.

Waste oil theft is a growing crime of opportunity in areas where many of the chain’s burger stores are located, and the location of the waste oil tanks — inside or outside — doesn’t matter. “Waste oil is the new copper,” said the equipment manager. “We’ve even had shortening stolen from inside our stores. The thieves back a truck up to the building, suck the grease out, and leave. But with the anti-theft valve and without the password, it’s just a no-go and doesn’t work. The electronic valve is a great idea. It provides foolproof security.”

Frontline’s collection ports, where renderers hook up their trucks to pick up waste oil, feature an integrated anti-theft valve that makes it impossible for thieves to drain out the stored oil — and easier for the chain’s authorized suppliers to collect it. Waste oil tanks stored outside a foodservice establishment have the protected valve built in. For tanks stored on the interior, the same anti-theft valve extends to the building’s exterior.

Since the retrofitted stores were so pleased with Frontline’s system, in 2015 the burger chain decided to include its direct-plumbed fryer setup in the design and build of two new store locations.

The chain builds new locations from the ground up in 60 days, so the direct-plumbed system had to fit into that compressed timeline while also delivering advantages that would justify using the equipment from the word go. “When it’s included from the beginning,” the equipment manager said, “the plans can be part of the scope of work so there’s no confusion for inspectors, no special permits to secure. The equipment is obviously easier to use, safer and cleaner, sure — but we wanted to see what advantages we might get from including the equipment in a new store build.”

In addition to the security that Frontline equipment’s anti-theft valve brings, the burger chain has reaped benefits from implementing Frontline’s M3 data management system, which can be accessed anywhere there is an internet connection. The equipment manager discovered that the M3 system was able to weave seamlessly into the chain’s WAN (wide area network), giving him the ability to monitor the waste oil in all stores right from his computer. “The M3 system has also helped with monitoring our renderers, because now we can tell, when a certain number of gallons were supposed to be picked up, if a different amount was actually taken. That information can be very helpful in terms of long-term cost savings,” he said.

It seems likely that the chain will retrofit additional existing stores with the direct-plumbed system, he said, so their waste oil can be more safely and securely managed.” The chain is also considering including Frontline’s equipment as part of the new store building process in the future. Wow, indeed.

Frontline International Anti-Theft Innovation Part of Exclusive M3 Backend Data System

Just like copper wire from abandoned or foreclosed homes can attract opportunistic thieves, waste oil stored in an unguarded bin outside a restaurant or even in sealed indoor or outdoor tanks can become a target for waste oil thieves.

According to a recent article in Renderer Magazine, used cooking oil’s increasing popularity in the biodiesel/biofuels industry has made it a “hot” commodity for several years now.

And despite today’s lower oil prices, your cooking oil remains a commodity at risk. Waste cooking oil is a foodservice establishment’s asset to control and one that represents a return on investment for restaurant operators who have installed Smart Cooking Oil Management equipment from Frontline International, Inc.

Frontline, winner of two of the National Restaurant Association’s Kitchen Innovations Awards, offers a simple solution to foil would-be “oil rustlers” and protect restaurateurs’ profits on the sale of used cooking oil. They prevent access by locking tanks digitally.

The Crime and How it Is Prevented

However waste oil is stored, in an unguarded outdoor bin or in even more sophisticated sealed indoor and outdoor tanks, it can become an easy target for this decade’s crime of opportunity. As it relates to tanks, if the valve used by legitimate oil collectors to pump waste oil from the restaurant remains unlocked between pickups, the thieves can easily access these unlocked valves and draw “liquid gold” from the establishment.

Frontline solves this waste oil crime for its customers before it can happen—with collection ports that are connected to the company’s web-based M3 Data Management System. The ports feature an integrated anti-theft valve that makes it impossible for thieves to drain out the stored oil. Tanks stored outside a foodservice establishment have the protected valve integral to their assembly, and for tanks stored inside the facility, the same anti-theft valve is on the building’s exterior.

How it Works

The authorized oil-collection truck simply pulls up to the building and hooks up a drainage hose from the truck to the collection port. The anti-theft valve can then be opened remotely by either logging into the M3 Data Management System or by entering a password on a control panel on the tank itself. When the tank is empty, the valve is relocked. As a measure of comfort that the integrity of the system is supported, store personnel can log in and certify online any time the collection port is closed and locked.

Preventing waste oil theft is not just good for the bottom line, but better for the environment by ensuring that oil is in the hands of responsible processors. Frontline’s waste oil containment tanks are part of the company’s Smart Oil Management system.

Frontline Equipment Provides Custom Innovation for Burger Chain

Frontline International had a challenge. Their customer, a burgers-and-fries chain of restaurants with more than 300 locations, needed an equipment solution to efficiently manage the large quantity of cooking oil they use. The chain is dedicated to freshness, with no freezers or microwaves in any of their locations. In initial discussions with the customer, Frontline learned the company wanted a waste oil filtering system to help maintain the fresh taste they are famous for. Filtering cooking oil not only allows for longer and more consistent oil life, but can also reduce shortening waste, a sizeable cost savings for any burger chain.

The chain chose Frontline to create the custom oil filtering solution they needed. Frontline designs, manufactures, and distributes commercial foodservice equipment for the storage, handling, and disposal of cooking oil. The flexible and customizable options their equipment can provide make Frontline the ideal choice for nearly any foodservice operation that wants to filter and store their used cooking oil.

Frontline worked with a representative from the chain’s research and development department, who collaborated with Frontline’s engineers over several months to develop a custom solution that would work in all of the chain’s locations, regardless of the physical design and layout of the store.

“Our customer needed a portable solution, as the size of their store locations wouldn’t physically allow for a built-in filter to be installed,” said Giovanni Brienza, vice president of Frontline. “Our standard waste oil caddy was closest to what they needed, but in order to work for their needs, it had to be tweaked to make it a perfect fit for their requirements. We worked together with the customer on modifying that system to provide them a custom solution.”

This collaborative effort resulted in Frontline’s new rolling Flexible Filter System, a stand-alone filtration method that also allows operators to easily switch between different oil-filtering media, depending on the location’s needs and usage practices.

The Flexible Filter System offers a choice of stainless steel and paper that can be easily swapped out. Stainless is the most economical choice. Paper is the next step up, and can increase the quality of fried foods. The new filter system is lower to the ground to make it easier to use and includes a removable bucket to simplify cleanup. The Flexible Filter System can be used with any type or size of fryer.

“In addition to providing a custom design, we were able to offer a cost-effective solution for the customer,” said Brienza. “Other companies couldn’t offer a great product that would match their need and desire to filter used cooking oil, given the restrictions of store sizes and setups. But through our joint effort, we came to a solution that would work well for them, and it was then rolled out to all of their store locations.”

All of Frontline’s equipment is modular, flexible, and upgradable. Equipment comes with a one-year warranty on both parts and labor.
